Prayer Unanswered  and Prayer Perplexities

Prayer Unanswered

and Prayer Perplexities

Jump Off Text: Proverbs 28:9

Introduction: Isaiah 1:13-18, Matthew 7:21-23

I. The Problem Of Unanswered Prayer

There are at least SIX:

1.) Prayers About Doubt James 1:6-7

2.) Prayers of Selfishness James 4:3, Matthew 6:9

3.) Prayers Against God’s People

Examples: Numbers 22 (Balaam wanted to curse someone, God refused) King Saul toward David - Some pray for football team to win

4.) Prayers From Unclean Hearts Psalm 66:18

5.) Prayers From Unforgiving Spirits Matthew 5:23-24, Matthew 25:40

6.)Prayers From Hypocritical Family Relationships

I Peter 3:7, Ephesians 4:26-27, James 5:14

II. The Greatest Problem We Face Is Not Unanswered Prayer But Unoffered Prayer.

Matthew 6:6

Lets break this verse down, and notice:

1. The Period Of Prayer - “When thou prayest”

2. The Place Of Prayer - “Enter into thy closet.”

3. The Privacy Of Prayer - “Shut thy door”, “in secret”

4. The Person Of Prayer - “Pray to thy Father,”

5. The Promise Of Prayer -“thy Father...shall reward thee openly.

III. The Perplexities Are Prayer Answers

Much that perplexes us in our Christian experience is but the "answer" to our prayers.

1.) We pray for patience and God sends tribulation, for tribulation worketh patience.  Romans 5:3

2.) We pray for submission, and God sends suffering, for we learn obedience by suffering.  Hebrews 5:8

3.) We pray for unselfishness, and God gives us opportunities to sacrifice ourselves by thinking on the things of others.  Philippians 2:4

4.) We pray for victory, and the things of the world sweep down upon us in a storm of temptation, for "this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."  I John 5:4

5.) We pray for strength and humility, and some messenger of Satan torments us 'til we lie in the dust, crying to God for its removal. II Corinthians 12:7-11

6.) We pray for union with Christ, and God severs natural ties, and lets our best friends misunderstand us and seem indifferent to us.  Matthew 10:34-39, John 15:18-20

7.) We pray for love, and God sends peculiar suffering, and puts us with apparently unlovely people.  I Corinthians 13:4-7

He lets them say things which rasp the nerves and lacerate the heart, for "love suffereth long”.
