Matthew 13:47-53
This seventh parable in this great chapter of the Bible is the fifth parable similitude in the chapter. This parable, like the previous two, begins with “Again” (Matthew 13:47; cp. Matthew 13:44, 45). Therein is a needed lesson. It is the lesson that says we need repetition in the learning process. The flesh does not like the “again” business. But if you are going to learn anything well or do anything well, “again” must be part of the process. In studying the Scripture, you must study “again” and “again” if you are going to learn much. Isaiah 28:9-10 “Again” and “again” Christ taught the people parables to help instruct in spiritual matters. If the disciples had been like many folk in our churches today, they would have complained about all this repetitive instruction. However, we do not learn well without repetition. So, we need to repeat in teaching the Word. And this “again” principle helps underscore the importance of being in church Sunday after Sunday to take in the Word of God “again” and “again.”
I. CATCHING THE FISH Matthew 13:47-48
A. The Searching in The Sea Matthew 13:47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea,”Matthew 4:19, Luke 5:10, Revelation 17:1, Revelation 17:15
B. The Seizing of The Fish Matthew 13:47-48 “and gathered of every kind:” Matthew 13:48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore,” John 3:3
II. SORTING THE FISH Matthew 13:49-50
A. The Time of The Judgment Matthew 13:49-50 “So shall it be at the end of the world.”
B. The Angels in The Judgment Matthew 13:49 “the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,”
C. The Judging in The Judgment Matthew 13:48 “Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down,”
D. The Separation During the Judgment Matthew 13:49-50
“sever the wicked from among the just,” Matthew 13:50 “And shall cast them into the furnace of fire:”
E. The Eternal Damnation in The Judgment.
1. The Who Are the Damned
The people of the damned will be the: “Wicked” Matthew 13:49
2. The Position of The Damned Matthew 13:50
“And shall cast them into the furnace of fire:”
3. The Pain of The Damned Matthew 13:50 “there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” This also was mentioned earlier in this chapter (see Matthew 13:42).
“Wailing and gnashing of teeth” describes great sorrow and great pain. It is both the torture of the mind (“wailing”) and of the body (“gnashing of teeth”). Hell is no joking matter. Sixteen times it came directly from the lips of Jesus Christ. The Bible gives us several graphic pictures of what it is like to fall under the judgment of God. Revelation 14:10, 20:15, Matthew 13:40-42, Matthew 10:28, Revelation 14:10-11, 20:15
III. THE CONCLUDING PARABLE Matthew 13:51-53
A. Jesus Asked His Disciples A Question Matthew 13:51
“Jesus saith unto them, have ye understood all these things?”
B. Jesus’ Disciples Answered the Question Matthew 13:51
“They say unto him, Yea, Lord.”, John 16:13-15
C. Jesus Gives the Analogy Matthew 13:52
“Then said He unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven” In Bible times the term referred to a student and teacher of the law. A scribe was one who made handwritten copies of the Scriptures. Now Jesus compares them to a householder. This term describes one who is the head of a house. He is the person who is responsible for the welfare of a family. The one who is instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like a man who brings forth out of his treasure things new and things old. In Bible times householders had storehouses where things like food and clothes were kept. When needed something the head of the house would go to the storehouse and bring out what was needed. Some of the items would be old and reusable, other items would be new. The disciples grew and went forth with the gospel they would dispense both new and old revelation. So then, the disciples were responsible for bringing forth what they had learned to others. They were to distribute from the storehouse of their God-given knowledge.
