Matthew 5:17-20
JESUS: THE FULFILLMENT
JESUS: THE FULFILLMENT
Text: Matthew 5:17-20
Introduction: I want to talk to you about Jesus: The Fulfillment. How many truly fulfilled people do you know? How many people do you know who are satisfied, filled with joy and peace, assurance, spiritual satisfaction? How many? These verses speak of the Lord Jesus, as the great fulfiller. And, whoever you are today, if you don’t know the Lord Jesus Christ, you are behind in your education. No one is truly educated who is ignorant of the Lord Jesus Christ. You may know biology and the study of life, but how sad if you don’t know Jesus, the giver of life! You may astronomy and how the heavens go, but how sad if you don’t know Jesus and how to go to Heaven! You may know botany, the study of flowers, but how sad if you don’t know Jesus, who is Sharon’s sweetest rose and the lily of the valley: Song of Solomon 2:1 You may know geology and the ages of the rocks, but friend, it is sad indeed if you don’t know Jesus Christ, who is the Rock of Ages! You may know history and all of the record of mankind, but how sad if you don’t know Jesus Christ in whom we live and move and have our being: Acts 17:28 It is said of history that history is His story. So, all of Bible points us to the Lord Jesus Christ, and I want you to look at these four verses today that have been such a blessing to my heart.
I. THE WORD OF GOD IS FULFILLED PROPHETICALLY BY JESUS Matthew 5:17, Luke 24:27, Acts 10:43, Revelation 19:10, John 1:3, 14
II. THE WORD OF GOD IS FULFILLED PRACTICALLY BY JESUS
A.) The Moral Law Is Fulfilled by Jesus John 8:46, I John 3:4
B.) The Ceremonial Law Is Fulfilled by Jesus
All of those Old Testament ceremonies were about the Lord Jesus Christ. All of the Old Testament sacrifices pointed toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23, “The soul that sinneth, it must surely die” (Ezekiel 18:4, 20), “The soul that sinneth, it must surely die” (Ezekiel 18:4, 20), I John 1:7, II Corinthians 5:21
C.) The Judicial Law Is Fulfilled by Jesus
The judicial law of God is that: “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), Galatians 3:13, John 19:30, Romans 10:4
III. THE WORD OF GOD IS FULFILLED PERFECTLY BY JESUS. Jesus, to emphasize His belief in the Scriptures (which corrected their implied misconception of His view of the Scriptures), Christ spoke three important truths related to Scripture.
A.) The reliability of the Scriptures. Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
B.) The retribution from the Scriptures. Matthew 5:19 “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven:”
C.) The reward from of the Scriptures. Matthew 5:19 “but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32, Habakkuk 2:14
Conclusion:
A.) The Misconception About the Way Matthew 5:20
The people were really messed up on the matter of the way of salvation, which is a common problem in every age. They believed in works of righteousness to get them in heaven, and they believed the religious leaders were the prime example of having the needed righteousness to get to heaven.
B.) The Requirement for Salvation. Matthew 5:20 “That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees”
C.) The Rejected for Salvation. Matthew 5:20 “ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
First, the certainty of the rejection. “In no case.”
Second, the crowd for the rejection. “In no case.” Mark 8:34-35
