THE AUTHENTIC JESUS CHRIST BELIEVER
Main Scripture Text: I John 2:3–11

Introduction: John 2:1-2 The first two verses of this chapter focus on purity. God is interested in holiness. The world seems more interested in evil. But those who dwell in the Word will get their priorities right about character.
1. THE PURIFYING BY THE SCRIPTURES I John 2:1
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.” Psalm 119:11
2. THE PROVISION FOR THE SAVED I John 2:1
“And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”
3. THE PROPITIATION BY THE SAVIOR 1 John 2:2. In verse 4: “He that saith, I know him” (1 John 2:4). Look in verse 6: “He that saith he abideth in him” (1 John 2:6). Look in verse 9: “He that saith he is in the light” (1 John 2:9). Their walk doesn’t match their talk. John 2:3-11 What is a true believer?
I. THE AUTHENTIC BELIEVER SUBMITS TO THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS
A true believer, a real believer, a genuine and Authentic Christian—is somebody who is submitted to the Lordship of Jesus. John 2:4-5,
Luke 6:46 The word keep is an interesting word, also. The word keep means “to value as you would value a treasure”.
Do you give deference to the commandments of God? Do you guard them? Do you treasure the commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ? Are they meaningful to you? John 2:5
II. THE AUTHENTIC BELIEVER SEEKS THE LIFESTYLE OF JESUS
John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked., I John 4:1
A. A REAL LIFE OF HONESTY
B. A REAL LIFE OF PURITY I John 3:2–3
C. A REAL LIFE OF RIGHTOUSNESS I John 3:7,1 John 2:6
That is the lifestyle of Jesus. The Bible says, “We are to walk as He walked” (), because 1 John 4:17: “as he is, so are we in this world. “Now, “he that saith he abideth in Him ought also to walk” (1 John 2:6). The secret of walking as Jesus walked is to abide in the Lord Jesus Christ. John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: he that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.
D. A REAL LIFE OF RELINQUISHMENT
Are you totally surrendered to Jesus Christ? That’s what it means to abide in Him. The Apostle Paul said, “This one thing I do” (Philippians 3:13). Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24)—that’s what He said.
E. A LIFE OF RELIANCE
The life of a branch is a life of relinquishment; it is a life of reliance. Everything that the branch needs the vine supplies.
III. THE AUTHENTIC BELIEVER SHOWS THE LOVE OF JESUS I John 2:9-10, John 13:34, I John 2:7-8
A. IT IS SERVING LOVE And, Jesus said that after He’d washed His disciples’ feet, because real love is not just saying, “I love”; it is serving love.
B. IT IS SANCTIFYING LOVE
He was washing the feet as a symbol that He was cleansing and forgiving their sin. I John 2:11
C.?IT IS STEADFAST LOVE John 13:1
Conclusion: Please know that you are not saved by submitting to His Lordship. You are not saved by seeking His lifestyle. You are not saved by showing His love. But, if you are saved, you’ll do all of those things. You’re saved by the grace of God. But, if your religion hasn’t changed your life, you’d better change your religion. II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. There’s nobody so good they don’t need to be saved and nobody so bad they cannot be saved, if they’ll trust Jesus.
